Full course description

This course on the Chumash commentaries who lived into the Modern Era is the fourth in the 4-part Chumash series highlighting different commentaries.  Each course was finely prepared to give the student an inspiring look at the persona of the commentary and an insight into the depth and meaning of his writing.

All were highly original, often forging new paths in uncovering the Torah’s messages, and at the same time, loyal to the framework of traditional Meforshim. Each uncovered new layers of the plain meaning of the Torah and also soared above, with concepts of Kabbabah and Chassidus, Mussar and Middos, history and Halacha.

They include:  The Mekubalim, the fathers of Chassidus, the defenders of the Torah in the modern era and the leaders of Lithuanian Jewry composed some of the most beloved and studied Meforshim. This fascinating course explores the unique and trailblazing approaches of over a dozen of these Meforshim, stretching from the 1500’s to the 1900’s. The course includes the Alshich, the Ohr Hachaim, the Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid of Mezeritch, R’ Levi Yitzchok of Berdichev, R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk, R’ Shneur Zalman of Liadi (Lubavitch), R’ Nachman of Breslov, the Malbim, R’ Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, the Netziv, R’ Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, the Rogachover and the Torah Temimah.
